Cooling Close to the Quantum Ground State

Cooling Curves
Using a superconducting Nb resonator which is parametrically coupled to a nanomechanical resonator, we have cooled the mechanical resonator to thermal occupation of = 3.8+/-1.2.  This is the coldest mechanical mode to-date and we expect the device to spend 21% of its time in the quantum ground state.  Please see the preprint which is available at our publications page.

The figure shows two cooling curves (in blue) and the mechanical damping rate (black).  The closed blue points are taken with the sample at 145mK.  The open blue points show the cooling response with the mechanical resonator driven by electrostatic noise.  The blue lines are the expected cooling response from detailed balance.
